Adult Coloring Supplies (Books, Pens & Markers) You Need to Get Started

Do you need a new hobby? Are you looking for a way to relax and unwind after a busy day? In recent years, adults have been turning to a pastime from their childhood to help ease the day’s stresses: coloring.

Scientific evidence shows that coloring can be a great way to help adults relax. The Cleveland Clinic notes that coloring gives you something to focus on, which helps quiet the brain. It also gets you to turn your attention away from yourself.

Plus, coloring is pretty low-stakes. If your work involves many high-pressure situations, having a hobby that’s difficult to mess up and doesn’t put a lot of demands on you can be good for balance.

It doesn’t take much to get started with coloring as a hobby. The only art supplies you need are something to color and something to color with. As you get more and more into the hobby, you can start spending more on your supplies and experimenting with different media and types of designs.

Best Adult Coloring Supplies

When you’re just getting started with adult coloring, just get pencils or markers and a few coloring books. If you find coloring helps you relax, and you have the budget to spend more, you can start getting fancy with your supplies.

1. Coloring Books

You can’t get into coloring without something to color. Coloring books for grown-ups tend to feature more intricate designs, such as mandalas, compared to books designed for children. If the patterns or pictures you’re coloring are too easy, you’ll quickly get bored.

When you’re a beginner, it can be worthwhile to get free printable coloring pages to get an idea of what you like to color and what doesn’t appeal to you. Just Color has more than 1,500 printable pages in a variety of designs and patterns.

You can also check out coloring books with rave reviews on Amazon. “Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Coloring Book for Adults” has a nearly 5-star rating with more than 10,000 reviews. The “Coloring Book for Adults: Relaxation” also has a nearly 5-star rating and thousands of reviews.

If you like a little humor with your stress-relief, you can color in your favorite swear words. “A Swear Word Coloring Book for Adults” has more than 10,000 reviews and a rating near 5 stars.

A more peaceful option is to color in images from your favorite Disney films. More than 15,000 people have reviewed the “Disney Dreams Collection” coloring book, giving it nearly a 5-star rating.

2. Colored Pencils

Although crayons might be the instrument of choice for children who color, most adults prefer to use colored pencils, pens, or markers. Crayons’ size and shape can make it difficult to color in small areas or do detailed work.

Colored pencils come in two main varieties: oil-based and wax-based. Wax-based pencils are good for beginners because they’re easier to handle. If you’re just getting started, a good set to try is Prismacolor Premier colored pencils. They’re smooth and deeply pigmented and cost just a little over $1 per pencil if you buy the 12-pack.

As you get more into coloring, you might decide to spring for a set of oil-based pencils. Oil-based pencils blend more easily than wax-based ones, but there’s a learning curve when handling them. It’s very easy to put down too much color with an oil-based pencil, and they smear more readily.

A tin of 12 Faber Castell Polychromos oil-based pencils costs nearly twice as much as the Prismacolor Premier. But if you’re ready to up your coloring game, it can be worth it.

3. Markers

There are generally two camps in the adult coloring word: the colored pencil camp and the markers camp. Some people are convinced they’ll be a colored pencil person only to try markers and realize they prefer using them. So it’s worth trying out both to see which medium you like most.

The best art markers blend well and won’t bleed through the pages of adult coloring books. The rest is a matter of personal preference. You might want fine-point markers with a single tip or dual-tip markers, which have a fine tip and a thicker one. Some markers are refillable and have replaceable nibs, giving them a practically unlimited life.

If you’re just dipping your toes into coloring, a good marker set to start with is the Crayola Fine Line 40-count set. It costs more than a basic pack of Crayola markers you might buy for your kids’ art class but a lot less than other markers meant for adults.

These markers have vivid colors and a good selection of hues. They also have a relatively long life. Note: Crayola markers can dispense ink heavily, so use a light hand when coloring with them.

If you want to spend a bit more on markers or are looking for a brush tip, try Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Brush Pens. The markers don’t bleed through paper, and they dry to be completely smudge-proof.

Looking for the Rolls-Royce of markers? You need the Copic Ciao set. Copic markers are refillable, and you can replace the nibs if they become damaged. The ink is alcohol-based, so it causes less damage to paper than water-based ink. It’s also acid-free, so it won’t wear down the page over time. Copic markers easily cost about 10 times as much as Crayolas, so they’re only worth getting if you know you’re going to be into coloring for a while.

4. Gel Pens

Let’s not forget about the gel pen camp of colorists. While the colored pencil people and the markers folks are squaring off, team gel pen is coloring away in a corner. Gel pens have a much thinner tip than most markers, making them an excellent tool to use for fine detail work. They also color smoothly, thanks to their liquid ink.

Plus, they’re available in tons of fun colors, including metallic and glitter options, as well as primary and pastel colors. The liquid ink tends to take longer to dry than markers, making them suitable for blending too.

If you want lots of gel pens for a small price, the Fineliner color pen set is a good place to start. It contains 60 pens in a range of colors, including metallics and bright colors. Note: The pens come in a metal case, which isn’t ideal for gel pens, so be sure to store them standing upright.

If you’re sure you’re on team gel pen and are ready to spend a bit more, consider the Staedtler Triplus Fineliner 20 pack. The pens come in a box you can stand upright on your desk to keep the tips from getting gummy. The Staedtler Fineliner pens have a Dry Safe feature, which keeps them from drying up even if you forget to replace the cap.

Want some more unique color options? Sakura Gelly Roll is credited with introducing gel ink pens to the market. The brand is known for producing lots of vibrant colors, including a set of metallic, glittery ink pens.

5. Pencil Sharpener

All colored pencils need sharpening eventually. Either the tip of the pencil breaks off, or it dulls from use. You may have been sharpening pencils since kindergarten, but there’s a right way and a wrong way to sharpen your colored pencils. And some types of sharpeners are better than others for colored pencils.

Your best bet is to get a small, handheld sharpener, like the Maped 2-hole classic sharpener. It’s inexpensive and has openings for standard-size pencils and thicker coloring tools, such as charcoal. An electric sharpener or a crank-style sharpener is likely to chew up your pencils and isn’t worth the extra cost or hassle.

Using a handheld sharpener gives you the most control. You can tell if you’re using too much pressure, so you can avoid oversharpening your pencils.

Keep two things in mind when using a handheld sharpener. First, the blade must be sharp. A dull blade won’t sharpen well and is more likely to chew up or break your pencil.

The other is the method you use to sharpen the pencil. Turn the sharpener while holding the pencil still. If you turn the pencil, you end up putting much more pressure on it, which can damage it.

6. Erasers

You can use erasers to lighten color in a particular area or clean up your work as you near the end.

Like markers, the type of eraser you use is a matter of personal preference. Some colorists love kneadable erasers, which let you lift excess color off of the page. Others prefer erasers in the shape of a pen, such as the Tombow mono eraser. The Tombow eraser is similar in size and shape to a pencil line, making it easier to remove errant lines or marks.

7. Pencil Extender

The more you use and sharpen colored pencils, the smaller they get. At some point, they get so small they aren’t comfortable to hold in your hand. That’s where a pencil extender comes in handy. A pencil extender helps you get the most out of your colored pencils by making them long enough to hold in your hand once again.

When choosing a pencil extender, look for one that securely attaches to your pencil and has a comfortable grip. The Derwent pencil extender set contains two extenders, one for standard-size pencils (up to 7 mm) and one for thicker pencils. The extenders screw onto the end of your pencils, gripping them securely. They also have a soft coating on the barrel that makes them comfortable to hold in your hand.

8. Blenders

When you’re ready to take your coloring to the next level, invest in blending tools, which let you soften edges between colors or create an ombre effect. You can also use blenders for layering colors.

If you use colored pencils, you’ll want a blending pencil, such as the Prismacolor colorless blender pencil. It has the same soft core you’ll find in Prismacolor colored pencils but is clear, so it doesn’t change the color of your work. This blender pencil does a good job of removing white areas from your coloring pages, creating smoother, more deeply pigmented work.

A marker blender is an alcohol-based marker without ink. You can use it to fade color into the page or lighten a color that’s too dark. Some people put the blender on the page before coloring with a marker to create a lighter shade. A blender marker isn’t meant for blending different colors, however.

Copic has a colorless blender that works with its markers. Crayola has also introduced a line of markers that work with a colorless blender. The Crayola set can be a good choice if you want to play around with blending before shelling out for a pricier set of markers and a separate blender.

9. Carrying Case and Organizer

Your coloring pencils or markers might come in their own carrying case, but you’ll also want somewhere to stash coloring accessories, like erasers and sharpeners. The LIHIT LAB zipper pen case is compact and portable and has room to store pencils, markers, and accessories securely. It also comes in a variety of colors.

To store coloring supplies on a desk, choose a divided organizer, such as the mDesign storage organizer caddy, which has six sections for all your coloring supplies. This organizer is ideal for gel pen storage as it will keep the pens upright.

The bigger your coloring stash gets, the bigger your storage options will need to be. The four-drawer artist’s storage box has plenty of room for all your supplies. Plus, it looks attractive.

10. Color Theory and Tutorial Books

Anything worth doing is worth doing well. As you get more into coloring, whether for fun or stress relief, you might find you’re more interested in color theory and how colors work together. Josef Albers is considered the master of color theory. His book “Interaction of Color” is a must-read for anyone interested in learning more about color and art in general.

If you want more practical coloring advice, check out the “New Guide to Coloring.” It’s designed for colorists of all levels, including beginners, and will teach you the basics of blending, layering, and shading.

As you build your skills as a colorist, “Color Workshop” can be worth a read. It contains tips for creating artistic effects with color.

Final Word

Whether it’s something you do just for fun or to earn some extra cash, starting a new hobby is always an excellent excuse to learn and grow.

While you might be excited to jump into coloring, it’s wise to start small. Buy only what you need and go with the more affordable choices first. If you find you enjoy coloring, you can upgrade to higher-quality pencils or markers and start laying out some serious cash on coloring books and other gear.

Chime Bank Reviews for 2021 | Fee-Free Mobile Banking

If you’re looking for a way to eliminate needless monthly expenses, banking fees are a great place to start. They may seem harmless, but these small, monthly charges add up over time to a lot of wasted money.

Chime

In the past, consumers were pretty much at the mercy of their brick-and-mortar banks and didn’t have a lot of say when it comes to fees. But increasingly, mobile banking has become an attractive option for many consumers.

If you’re looking for a way to eliminate fees and switch to mobile/online banking, Chime Bank could be a great option for you. In this Chime review, we will provide an overview of Chime so you can decide if it’s the best choice for you.

What is Chime and how does it work?

Chime Bank is a mobile, FDIC-insured bank that offers checking and savings accounts. The bank often appeals to millennial consumers thanks to its simplified approach to banking.

When you sign up with Chime, you receive access to a free checking account, debit card, and savings account. When you add money to your account, it will initially be deposited into your checking account. You will likely use this account most often for daily expenses. You can transfer money to savings as needed.

You can also deposit cash into your Chime Spending Account at over 60,000 retail locations where Green Dot is available. Your deposits are FDIC insured up to $250,000 through Bancorp Bank.

Users have multiple ways to save their money with Chime. You have the option to set up automatic transfers to savings. Every time you get paid, Chime will automatically transfer a percentage of your paycheck over to your savings account. This can be a good option for individuals that have a hard time saving on their own.

What are Chime’s key features and services?

Before you sign up for a Chime account, it’s a good idea to know some of the account features and services you’ll be receiving. Here is an overview of the bank’s services, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Chime Checking

There is no minimum balance required to open an account with Chime, which the bank calls a spending account. When you sign up, you’ll automatically receive access to a Visa debit card, which is tied to your Chime account.

They don’t offer paper checks, so if you need to write someone a check, you can do this through the Chime app. The check will be processed within three to nine business days. However, you can pay bills with their online bill pay feature.

Chime Savings Account

Chime also offers a high-yield savings account that you can apply for separately from the checking account. However, the interest rate is only 0.50% APY, which is very competitive right now.

Automatic Savings Program

Once you’re signed up for a savings account, you’ll receive instant access to their automatic savings feature. Every time you make a purchase with your debit card, Chime will round up the purchase amount to the nearest dollar. This money will automatically be added to your savings account.

Small numbers add up to big numbers over time, so this is a great way to slowly start building your savings account. And best of all, it will happen without you even having to think about it.

Early Direct Deposit

When you set up direct deposit, you’ll automatically be able to receive your funds up to two days early. As soon as Chime receives the direct deposit from your employer, it will post to your account.

Mobile Support

Some people get nervous at the thought of not having a physical bank they can visit with questions and concerns. But Chime provides quite a bit of support through its mobile app, which is available on iOS and Android devices.

You can keep track of your spending, deposits, and withdrawals entirely through the mobile app. With the mobile app, you can quickly check your statement balance even when you’re on the go. You can also deposit paper checks by snapping a photo using mobile check deposit.

Customer Service

Chime Bank’s simplified approach to banking can be a detriment when it comes to customer service. The bank offers customer service support, but it won’t be as extensive as what you’re used to with a brick-and-mortar bank.

If you think this might be an issue for you, you should probably consider going with a more traditional bank.

ATM Access

There will be times when you need to withdraw cash, which is why Chime provides access to over 38,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide. There is a $2.50 fee if you need to use an out-of-network ATM, which is the only fee Chime Bank charges.

Does Chime charge any fees?

One of the most frustrating aspects of traditional banks is the multitude of fees they seem to stick you with. Chime offers a truly fee-free banking experience:

  • No overdraft fees or overdraft protection fees
  • No monthly account service fees
  • No ACH bank transfer fees
  • No card replacement fees
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • No ATM fees (in-network)

These fees may seem small, but they add up over time. If you pay monthly fees of $9.95 for a year, you’re spending over $119 a year just to do business with that bank. And if you regularly pay overdraft fees, the charges get even more ridiculous.

That’s why one of the biggest advantages of banking with Chime is that there are no fees. The bank doesn’t charge monthly maintenance fees, and you don’t have to worry about overdraft fees either. If a charge is submitted that would overdraw your account, Chime will simply reject the transaction.

Who is Chime best for?

Chime Bank is a great option for anyone looking for an online-only bank. If you’re looking for a fee-free bank and ready to get rid of the hassle of brick-and-mortar banks, then this could be the right bank for you.

Also, Chime is on our list of top banks that don’t use ChexSystems, so if you have a troubled banking history, no worries, you can still get an account.

However, there are a few things you should keep in mind before signing up for a Chime bank account. The first thing you should consider is that you won’t have access to in-person support.

For some people, that may not seem like a big deal. But if there’s a problem with your account, you’re going to have to wait until you can get ahold of a customer service representative. And you’ll have to hope that person can take care of the issue over the phone.

And while direct deposits are simple and straightforward, depositing cash can be more tedious since there isn’t a physical location you can visit.

Chime Reviews

One of the best ways to find a great bank is by reading third-party reviews. You can discover what actual customers are saying about them before you choose to do business with them. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) currently gives Chime an ‘A+’.

You’ll be relieved to know that if you do some research, you will find many 4- and 5-star Chime Bank reviews at several other customer review sites as well.

Summary

When it comes to managing your money, consumers have more options than ever. If you’re looking for an online-only bank, Chime might be an excellent option for you. It’s important to do your research first and figure out what features are non-negotiable for you.

While you will save a lot of money on fees, Chime doesn’t offer a great interest rate on its savings account. If you’re looking for a more robust APY, check out the Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Online.

What we like about BlueVine’s business checking account

Unlimited transactions

Unlike some other banks that limit the number of ATM transactions or other transactions you make each month, BlueVine allows for an unlimited number of transactions, which is how we think it should be. It even provides business owners with two free books of checks when you open your account. Other banks will charge you as much as $50 to order checks, which really boils down to a transaction fee for each check you write.

Earn interest

BlueVine was launched as a financing company for small businesses that have little history or poor credit, offering invoice factoring, lines of credit and loans with very competitive interest rates. Now, the lender has taken that focus on saving money for small businesses to its new high-yield business checking account. The 1% APY offered on all balances is 10 times what most banks are offering currently. And it comes with no fees and unlimited transactions.

Things to consider

Online-only

Many people prefer to have a personal relationship with their banker and even though you will get the same type of service you’ve come to expect from a local branch at BlueVine, it isn’t the same as when you know your banker, and work with the same individual for years at a time. When you have a personal relationship with your banker it can often help to get things accomplished, and your bank be more trustworthy of you personally rather than relying on cold and impersonal credit scores and other ratings.

BlueVine business checking account vs. the competition

Wells Fargo

SimpleScore: 3.4/5

Wells Fargo is a major U.S. bank, and just like any of the major U.S. banks the biggest thing you’ll find is the list of fees with its business checking account. Wells Fargo may be a good choice when your business grows to a level where you require its advanced services, but for a fair business checking account without fees BlueVine will beat Wells Fargo any day of the week. Read our full Wells Fargo review.

Axos Bank

SimpleScore: 4/5

Axos Bank and BlueVine have quite a few similarities in their offered checking accounts, such as no fees and high-yield interest rates. However the Axos accounts aren’t strictly business accounts, and unlike BlueVine there is a minimum deposit when you open a checking account at Axos. In addition, Axos Bank has a $25 overdraft fee on several of its checking account products, and the bank can charge that fee up to three times per day. As an online-only bank Axos won’t appeal to those who prefer a more personal banking relationship. The bank can also be problematic for those who need to deposit cash, since it comes with a fee of $4.95 to make cash deposits, but that’s no different from BlueVine. Read our full Axos Bank review.

Azlo

SimpleScore: 3.6/5

Azlo is actually quite similar to BlueVine. It features no fees of any kind, no minimum deposits for its business checking account and no minimum balance requirements. It is fully online and that’s the start of the differences between Azlo and BlueVine since BlueVine has three physical locations. The other major difference between Azlo and BlueVine is the interest paid on business checking accounts. Azlo doesn’t offer any interest, while BlueVine has an excellent 1% APY on its business checking. One final difference is the inability to deposit cash in an Azlo account. At BlueVine you can also make cash deposits at over 90,000 retail stores in partnership with Green Dot.

BlueVine in the news

  • BlueVine expanded into business checking in October 2019, as reported on by BankingDive.com, adding to its offerings for small business owners in search of a more democratic banking experience. BlueVine CEO and co-founder Eyal Lifshitz called the move “true end-to-end banking” for small businesses.
  • As reported in August 2020 by SmallBizTrends.com, BlueVine and DoorDash have partnered to provide custom Paycheck Protection Program loan applications for restaurants. While many restaurants were shut out of the PPP loan application process by traditional banks that focused on servicing their existing customers, BlueVine was able to rapidly provide funding to restaurants that may have otherwise had to shut down.
  • BlueVine has delivered over $6 million in PPP loans to DoorDash restaurants, such as the $125,000 loan granted within 24 hours to Jazmine Lalicker, owner of the Petaluma, California oyster bar and seafood restaurant called The Shuckery. That’s just a part of the more than $4 billion in PPP loans generated by BlueVine for over 125,000 U.S. small businesses.

A seriously romantic idea for the bold: re-create each other’s likenesses while on a video chatting application like FaceTime.
If that’s a little too intimate, you could simply spend time together being creative, whether that means knitting, cross-stitching, painting or something else entirely. You could even make plans to gift each other the products of your art therapy session.

2. Ballroom (or Any Other Kind of) Dancing

Get the Penny Hoarder Daily
Even if you hail from the same place (or have already gone home to meet the parents), you could use Google Earth or Google Maps to show your sweetheart around your college campus — or explore a city you’re hoping to visit together someday.

3. Game Night

If your movie or TV show is on another service — or if, quaintly and adorably enough, you’re going to watch the same DVD in separate houses at the same time — you can always hop on the phone and queue up the video. Don’t forget the popcorn!
It might not sound like the peak of romance to some, but sitting down to a game of Scrabble or Chess together is a great way to spend some quality time while also giving your brain a workout. If you’re really geeky, you might even take on a match or four of Magic: The Gathering.

4. Virtual Hometown Tours

Thanks to technology, there are some ways to recreate a date experience even if you’re miles apart.
You can definitely recreate the restaurant experience at home, complete with dressing up for the occasion and actually sitting down and being waited on. That’s exactly what the Beaumonts did. According to Celina, Kenny and the kids had been conspiring about the idea for several days before surprising her.

5. At-Home Spa Services

If you were already cohabitating, there are plenty of ways to set aside some special time for each other.

Tips for Successful At-Home Date Nights

Here are some tips to make it feel more like you’re actually together.
But dinner dates are just the beginning. Here are some of our favorite at-home date night ideas.

  • Put away your phone. Celina and Kenny say they make a point of putting their screens down during dates.
  • Wait until after bedtime. It’s fun to get the kids in on the action — but if they go to bed earlier than you do, those couple hours of quiet can be a great time to rekindle your connection.
  • Look for the silver linings. Although staying home is hard in a whole lot of ways, it also offers a lot of opportunity for closeness, especially in a world where we’re usually running all over the place.

Even with the best of intentions and lots of planning, it’s easy for an at-home date night to feel like … well, just another night at home.

Date Night Ideas if You’re Apart

They printed real menus, got dressed up and dined al fresco on a three-course meal at “Jack & Olivia’s” — so named for their kids. Kenny cooked up the steaks, while the kids made the salad and dessert.

6. Virtual Coffee (or Cocktails)

“If we’re not happy and having fun,” Celina told us in an interview, “our household’s not going to be happy and having fun.”

7. Reading to Each Other

The options are endless: You could pick a book neither of you have read before or revisit an old favorite.
From superstars to local up-and-comers, lots of entertainers have transferred their live shows to streaming services. Many are free, though it’s nice to drop a tip for these struggling artists.

8. Live Streaming Concerts and Events

Treat yourself — and your beau — to some DIY indulgence. Whether you give each other manicures, facials, or massages, it’s bound to be a whole lot more affordable (and considerably more fun) than it would be in a salon. Check out this list of spa treatments you can do at home.
But there are still free and low-cost ways to keep up the date night tradition.

9. Virtual Movie Nights

Ready to stop worrying about money?
We recommend adding fancy duds to the equation to make it feel even more date-y.

10. Art Therapy

A browser extension called Teleparty easily syncs Netflix, Disney, Hulu and HBO videos for multiple parties while also providing a scrolling text chat along the right side of the screen.

Tips for Successful Date Nights Spent Apart

The coronavirus pandemic put a halt on a whole lot of awesome things, including date night. If you’ve been with your sweetie for years, it can be tough to find something special to do when you’re spending most of your time at home together. And if you were just getting started dating, it’s hard to establish a connection when you’re apart.

  • Get dressed. It’s all too easy to lie around the house in pajamas all day… and even attend your dates that way. Wearing real clothes can make you feel more like you’re on a real date.
  • Connect often. If you can’t be with each other in person, spending digital time together is extra important. Maybe try to move your date night tradition from one night a week to two or three.
  • Remember: It’s only temporary. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and although we don’t know when this pandemic is going to end, end it shall.

Although they’ve been married for over a decade, Kenny and Celina Beaumont have always realized the importance of romance — especially after having kids.

If you didn’t grow up in the same place as your SO, and you’ve yet to show them around in person, Google Earth offers a great date night opportunity: a virtual tour of your hometown, complete with stops at all the most important places.
